What is yoga?
The word "yoga" is derived from a Sanskrit word which means to join or to yoke. In the Western world, yoga is often defined as union of body and mind. Because it is a seemingly esoteric concept and has a spiritual component, some people find yoga intimidating. There is no doubt that yoga is much more than a physical practice. Yet, whether or not one is on a spiritual path, an asana practice in and of itself will, at the very least, promote structural stability and physiological and emotional health. Eventually students can use the physical body to access consciousness and eventually reach deep into the mind.

What to expect in a yoga class?
Yoga is an ancient practice that has been handed down through the ages from teacher to student. This unbroken tradition can be found all over the world. Yoga classes at The Yoga Loft are made up of a series or sequence of poses or postures, known as asanas. These asanas were designed to tone the whole body and provide a sense of physical well being which, in turn, strengthens and calms the mind. Types of asanas include standing poses, seated poses, twists, forward bends, back bends, and inversions.

What are the different types of yoga offered?
The Yoga Loft offers two kinds, or traditions, of yoga: Iyengar and Vinyasa. These methods of yoga share the same roots but are different in their approach.

Where to start?
If you are new to yoga, it is best to start with beginner level classes and learn the system rather than relying on the fact that you are in good shape and jump right into more advanced classes. It is also recommended that whenever trying a new teacher, start in their beginner class. Not all beginner classes are taught the same way as teachers all have different styles. Once you master basic alignment and breathing techniques and gain some flexibility, advancing in any of the systems can provide challenges in terms of strength, endurance and balance. If you have any questions, call the studio at 415.626.5638 for advice on classes or teachers that would be appropriate for you.

Since practicing yoga at a studio may be a new experience for you, we offer the following guidelines:

Before your class:

  • Be Comfortable. Wear loose-fitting or non-restrictive clothing and avoid accessories that could impede your movement. Classes are all barefoot.
  • Be Clean. Teachers often work physically with students and students practice close to one another so please be considerate about your hygiene. Bathe before class and refrain from using perfumes and too many scented products.
  • Be Empty. It's good not to eat a big meal at least 2-3 hours before class. Avoid drinking water during class, but remember to hydrate afterwards.

Upon Entering the Studio:

  • Turn off the Ringer. The studio is a quiet, sacred place. Please turn off your cell phone and take a deep breath.
  • Talk to us. If you're a new student, try and arrive a few minutes early for class so you can get acquainted with the studio and introduce yourself to the teacher or the person at the front desk. We are happy to help you to find a style, level, or class that is most appropriate for you.
  • Check in. Visit the front desk and sign your name on the signup sheet. Take off your shoes and put them in the changing area. Leave all jackets and street clothes in the changing area, but feel free to take all valuables into the studio and place them in the cubbies or in a corner out of the way.
  • Like your Yoga Mat. You are welcome to rent a yoga mat from the front desk ($1), but we recommend that you have your own. You are welcome to store your personal mat in the back room of the studio; please make sure you mark your name on your mat and keep it rolled up, tied with a rope or band, and neatly stored.

After your Class:

  • Think of others. Please put all your props away neatly. Be quiet and mindful while getting dressed and ready to leave—other classes are in session.

Thank you all for continuing to support community & practice at The Yoga Loft. We appreciate your feedback, questions, and comments so please feel free to let us know about your experience.
